Only resident individuals are allowed to but foreign exchange in India. NRI’s are allowed to buy if they reside in India for atleast 6 months in a financial year or as per case to case basis.
Any resident individual can buy foreign exchange for the purpose of leisure travel, vacations, business travel, corporate travel, pilgrimage travel, medical travel, event travel and educational travel.
A resident individual can carry upto 3000 USD or equivalent in cash per trip. Any amount exceeding the threshold has to be carried only in the form of prepaid forex cards. A resident individual can carry upto a limit of 2,50,000 USD or equivalent in a financial year in the form of cash or cards.
There is no upper limit on foreign currency you can bring to India. Foreign currency notes exceeding 5000 USD or equivalent require a Currency Declaration Form (CDF) at Indian Customs. Total foreign exchange (notes + traveller checks + cards) exceeding 10000 USD requires a CDF. Below these thresholds, no declarations are required.
To buy foreign exchange in India, you need to produce the following documents:
  • Passport
  • PAN Card
  • Visa ( where applicable )
  • Aadhar ( case to case basis)
  • Travel documents ( Tickets, hotel reservations )
  • University admission letter ( Educational travel )
  • Business documents ( Business travel )
  • Any other document that is required to establish the purpose of travel
To sell foreign exchange in India, you need to produce the following :
  • Any government recognized ID ( for smaller amounts )
  • Passport ( For larger amounts )
  • Travel proof or source proof
  • PAN card ( for Indians )
For selling foreign currency, you can get paid in cash for upto 1000 USD or equivalent. For buying foreign currency, you can pay in cash for amounts less than 50000 INR. Any amount equal to or exceeding 50000 INR has to be paid only in the form of cheques, debit cards or online payment. No part payment is permitted.
One can buy or sell foreign exchange in India only from RBI Authorized Dealers in India. Banks, AD-II category dealers and FFMCs are only permitted exchange houses in India. Dealing foreign exchange with any other individual or company not permitted by the RBI is completely illegal and one should refrain from falling into traps of posing individuals to save themselves from getting into legal trouble.
